Hannes Lochner Profile

Hannes Lochner

After the success of his previous book, Colours of Southern Africa, this born and bred Capetonian went to his favourite game park, The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, to work on his next masterpiece. Hannes spent a total of 800 days in this arid corner of Southern Africa that is shared by Namibia, South Africa and Botswana.

Long days in his vehicle in the scorching heat of the Kalahari made the images in this book possible. Icy winter nights around the camp fire and summer thunderstorms helped set the stage for his photographic creations. Through the ever-changing seasons that are marked by the ebb and flow of the vegetation of this unforgiving land, he had raw nature as his palette.

Staying within park hours, roads and rules was problematic and he therefore also had to visit an adjacent private game reserve (Kalahari Oryx) for his night photography. This was needed to find the elusive nocturnal Pangolin, amongst other creatures. Never losing faith in his own capabilities, he continued searching until he had found all the elements of this collection.

Back in Cape Town with his friends, around a glass of wine and a plate of sushi, he told stories from his most amazing wildlife diary and he even had the pictures to prove it! After months in front of the computer, and working against deadlines, he had to scrutinize thousands of photographs to get the best of the best.

His hard work, determination to give his all, natural instinct to manipulate light and intuition for “what works” have lead to the latest addition to his ‘Colours of Africa’ series. So sit back and indulge in this masterfully created work of art!

He is currently in the Kalahari on another project, concentrating on nightlife. He will be there for another 2 years and has been there for the last 6 months already.
